Since my first son was born, I have made a tradition of giving photo calendars to close family members for Christmas.  I have always ordered from Walgreens, but this year, I discovered Picaboo.  I ordered a few last month using a Groupon deal, but didn't plan on getting more because they are much more expensive.  Well, with their current Buy One Get One Free Deal this was a no-brainer!

Their background options and layouts are so much nicer than any drugstore.  I could have paid around $80 at Walgreens for desk calendars, or $100 on Picaboo for wall calendars of much higher quality!  This deal ends at midnight on Tuesday so hurry up and start creating!

Toys R Us Crayola Update

What's that saying about seeming too good to be true???  Well, this deal was mostly true.  I received all three of my "ready to pick up" emails late last night, so I though I was good to go.  If you ordered this deal as well, make sure you scroll down in the email because you may have a hidden notice that part of your order could not be filled.

Under normal circumstances Toys R Us will just credit you back for the unavailable item.  In this case, the item I didn't get was free (the Dry Erase Markers) so there was no payment to credit back.  You may be thinking since I didn't pay for it, I shouldn't be upset.  Well, this is more of a matter of principle for me.

Toys R Us told me my product was available and completed the transaction.  They NEVER allow for substitutions on online orders.  I asked if there were any coupons or other offers available for the inconvenience...nothing.  I was told five times the order was cancelled, and that was that.  I even mentioned the possibility of going public with this experience, and nothing changed.

Again, I'm technically not out anything financially, but this is the opposite of customer service.  Had I known before finalizing the order that the item was not available, I would have made a different selection.  To me, offering a substitution is not a crazy request since that is basically what I would have done if their website could keep up with their inventory.  

It is now clear to me why I only shop there when there are deals like this, and now, not even then.  My local store is dirty, cluttered and rundown.  I don't think they've given the place a spruce since I shopped there as a child.  I do have a hard time turning down good deals, but it would have to be beyond amazing to get me back in there.

The best part about coupons at Wal-Mart is they allow overages.  Tonight, I knew I would be able to use my 4 $3/1 Kikkoman Panko Breadcrumbs or Sauce Coupon for a product priced less than the coupon.  I went with 4 different sauces; two were priced at $1.82 each, the other two were $2.08 each. This gave me an overage of $4.20 to start with!

Chicken a la Coupons!

I was determined to put together a great family dinner tonight, and I realized half way through, every ingredient I was using was either free or incredibly cheap thanks to coupons!

Here's the list:

Package of three chicken breasts, bought at Shaw's the last time they had a BOGO deal.  If you recall, this was a while ago.  I always buy at least six packages and freeze most or all of them.  The cost per package was right around $3.50.

This was my first time using the new Philadelphia Cooking Cream.  I stacked a BOGO with a $1/1 coupon to get this for FREE!

The Veggies are two boxes of Green Giant Healthy Vision with the steaming bag.  These were on sale for $1 each, plus I had a coupon for $1/3 so two boxes totaled $1.33.

The pasta is Essential Everyday Ziti from Shaw's.  Sale price two weeks ago was only $.88, minus the $1/1 EE product coupon from the Holiday Coupon Book (in stores), made the pasta FREE!!!

I topped it all off with a sprinkle of Sargento Sharp Cheddar Cheese.  These were on sale two weeks ago at Shaw's 2/$4, plus I had a coupon for $.55/1 which doubled for a final cost of only $.90 per bag!!!

The final cost for dinner for three plus three servings of left-overs was less than $5!!!

Sensational Seasonal Steals!!!

Printable coupons are wonderful things, with one exception; you don't know what the expiration date will be until after you print them!  Well, you're lucky you have me, because my curiosity got the best of me tonight.

Expiration dates on printable coupons are determined one of two ways; either a set amount of time beyond the print date, usually one month, or as of a pre-determined date.  If the coupon is for a new product, the date tends to be further out.  If it's for an all-time favorite, then you are likely to have a finite amount of time to use the coupon.

I noticed that every coupon for Halloween candy in the inserts during the weeks leading up to the holiday expired on October 31st.  That made sense, because it's before Halloween that you need the candy.  However, it's after when they go on clearance that us couponers want the candy, and we don't want to pay for it!

Tonight's experiment involved scouring coupon websites for Holiday printables and taking a big gamble...printing knowing that if they expire before prices are reduced, I may never use them!  Here are the results...
